Does CBD Affect Heart Rate? What Research and Safety Warnings Say

Many adults ask whether CBD can change heart rate, blood pressure, or heart palpitations. The safest answer is cautious: CBD may affect people differently, research is still developing, and anyone with heart concerns or medication questions should speak with a licensed healthcare professional before using CBD.

Quick answer

Does CBD Affect Heart Rate?

CBD may affect cardiovascular measurements in some situations, but consumer CBD products should not be used as a heart-rate treatment or as a substitute for medical care. A small controlled human study using a single 600 mg dose of CBD in healthy male volunteers reported lower blood pressure measurements alongside increased heart rate. That study does not prove that over-the-counter CBD products lower heart rate, raise heart rate, improve heart health, or are appropriate for people with heart conditions.

The practical takeaway is to treat CBD as a product that deserves careful review. If you monitor heart rate, take blood pressure medication, use blood thinners, take sedatives, have a heart rhythm concern, or have a diagnosed cardiovascular condition, discuss CBD with your healthcare professional before use.

Plain-language answer: CBD can affect people differently. The evidence is not strong enough to use CBD for heart-rate control, and product quality, THC content, dose, medication use, and personal health history all matter.

Research context

What Current Research Does and Does Not Show

Heart-rate questions are medically sensitive, so claims should stay narrow. Research can help frame the topic, but it should not be turned into product promises.

Topic What to Know Why It Matters
Heart-rate research A small healthy-volunteer study reported increased heart rate after a single 600 mg CBD dose while also measuring lower blood pressure. This is not a dosing guide and does not prove CBD is useful for heart-rate management.
Real-world CBD products CBD oils, gummies, capsules, topicals, and full-spectrum products vary by CBD amount, THC content, ingredients, and testing. Product labels and COAs matter because the research product may not match retail products.
FDA safety concerns FDA has identified risks including liver injury, drug interactions, drowsiness, gastrointestinal effects, and mood changes. People with heart conditions often take medications, so interaction questions are especially important.
Long-term use CDC notes that scientists are still learning how CBD affects the body and how different methods of use may matter over time. Long-term cardiovascular effects should not be assumed from limited studies.

CBD vs THC

CBD, THC, and Heart-Rate Questions Are Not the Same

CBD is not the same as THC. CDC describes CBD as a compound found in cannabis that is not impairing, while also warning that many businesses selling hemp or CBD products may also sell THC-containing products. Full-spectrum CBD products may contain trace THC, so the label and Certificate of Analysis should be reviewed before use.

For anyone tracking heart rate, palpitations, blood pressure, or drug-testing concerns, THC content should be checked carefully. Hemp-derived does not automatically mean THC-free, and a product name alone is not enough to confirm what is in the bottle or package.

Medication safety

Can CBD Interact With Heart Medications?

Yes. CBD may interact with medications, and FDA specifically warns that CBD can affect how other medicines work or how CBD itself is processed. This matters for people taking prescription medication, over-the-counter medication, herbs, supplements, sedatives, sleep aids, blood thinners, blood pressure medications, rhythm medications, seizure medications, liver-affecting drugs, or other products.

Do not stop, reduce, replace, or combine medications with CBD without medical guidance. Bring the product label and Certificate of Analysis to your healthcare professional so the discussion is product-specific.

Buying checklist

What to Check Before Choosing CBD If Heart Rate Is a Concern

CBD product transparency is especially important when the topic involves heart rate, medications, or diagnosed health conditions.

What to Check Why It Matters
Healthcare professional guidance Personal heart-rate questions should be discussed with a licensed professional.
CBD amount per serving Helps prevent confusion about serving size and product strength.
Total CBD per package Helps compare oils, gummies, capsules, and other formats.
THC content Full-spectrum CBD may contain trace THC, which can matter for safety and testing.
Other cannabinoids Helps identify CBG, CBN, CBC, Delta-8 THC, or other compounds.
Ingredients Helps identify allergens, sweeteners, carrier oils, caffeine, botanicals, or additives.
Product directions Oral, topical, gummy, capsule, and bath products are used differently.
Batch number Should match the Certificate of Analysis.
Certificate of Analysis Supports cannabinoid and testing transparency, but does not prove medical effectiveness.
Lab-testing date Helps verify product-specific testing information.
Warning language Responsible CBD companies include medication, pregnancy, nursing, THC, and safety cautions.

Product format

CBD Oils, Gummies, Capsules, and Topicals Are Used Differently

Product format can change how a person uses CBD and what details should be reviewed. Do not assume that one CBD format has the same considerations as another.

CBD Oils

Review CBD per serving, carrier oil, THC content, directions, product label, and COA.

CBD Gummies

Review CBD per gummy, sweeteners, ingredients, THC content, directions, product label, and COA.

CBD Capsules

Review CBD per capsule, capsule ingredients, THC content, directions, product label, and COA.

CBD Topicals

Review external-use directions, ingredients, fragrance, skin-sensitivity cautions, product label, and COA.

Heart palpitations

What About CBD, THC, and Heart Palpitations?

Heart palpitations can have many causes, and they should not be self-diagnosed through CBD content. If palpitations are new, severe, recurring, or paired with chest discomfort, shortness of breath, fainting, or dizziness, contact a healthcare professional promptly.

CBD and THC should not be grouped together. THC-containing products can produce psychoactive effects and adverse events, and full-spectrum CBD products may contain trace THC. Anyone with palpitation concerns should review THC content, avoid confusing CBD with THC products, and discuss product use with a qualified professional.

Cannabinoid Education

What Is CBN? Cannabinol, THC Degradation, Safety, and COAs

CBN, short for cannabinol, is a minor cannabinoid commonly associated with the aging and oxidation of THC. Because CBN is usually present in small amounts, adults should review product labels, THC content, Certificates of Analysis, lab testing, ingredient lists, manufacturing disclosures, and safety warnings before using cannabinoid products.

Important safety note: This article is for educational purposes only and is not medical advice. Bluegrass Hemp Oil products are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent sleep disorders, insomnia, anxiety, depression, pain, inflammation, epilepsy, seizures, glaucoma, appetite loss, skin conditions, neurological conditions, or any disease. Speak with a licensed healthcare professional before using cannabinoid products if you take medication, are pregnant or nursing, have liver concerns, have a medical condition, are subject to drug testing, or are shopping for a child or dependent.

What Is CBN?

CBN, or cannabinol, is a minor cannabinoid most often associated with THC breaking down over time through oxidation and aging.

CBN is not the same as CBD or THC. It is usually discussed as a minor cannabinoid because it tends to appear in smaller amounts than major cannabinoids such as CBD or THC. CBN is often associated with aged cannabis material because THC can gradually change into CBN over time.

CBN stands for cannabinol

Cannabinol is one of many cannabinoids discussed in hemp and cannabis education.

CBN is a minor cannabinoid

It is usually present in smaller amounts than CBD or THC, which makes product sourcing and testing important.

CBN is associated with THC aging

Storage, oxygen, light, and heat can all influence how cannabinoids change over time.

For broader cannabinoid context, learn about cannabinoids in hemp.

What Does CBN Stand For?

CBN stands for cannabinol.

Cannabinol is commonly discussed in relation to THC oxidation and degradation. It should not be confused with CBD, which stands for cannabidiol, or THC, which stands for tetrahydrocannabinol.

How Is CBN Made?

CBN is commonly associated with the oxidation or degradation of THC. Over time, exposure to oxygen, light, heat, and storage conditions can change THC into CBN. Because hemp normally contains only limited THC, naturally high-CBN hemp material may be uncommon, which is why sourcing, manufacturing methods, and lab testing matter.

Process Plain-English Meaning Why It Matters
Decarboxylation Heat converts acidic cannabinoids into neutral forms. THCA can become THC.
Oxidation/degradation THC changes over time with air, light, heat, and storage. THC can become CBN.
Isolation A cannabinoid is separated from an extract. COAs, purity testing, and contaminant testing matter.
Conversion/synthesis Chemistry is used to create or convert cannabinoids. Manufacturing disclosure and safety testing matter.

These terms are often used loosely in product descriptions. A careful buyer should look for the product label, batch number, Certificate of Analysis, and available testing details before assuming how a CBN product was made.

Is CBN Natural or Synthetic?

CBN can occur naturally as THC changes over time, but CBN used in consumer products may come from different sourcing and manufacturing methods.

Marketing language alone is not enough to determine whether a product is natural, synthetic, safe, or unsafe. The product label, Certificate of Analysis, testing panel, manufacturer disclosures, and state compliance all matter.

Source Type What It Means What to Check
Naturally occurring CBN CBN present in aged cannabis or hemp extract. COA, THC content, product source, and batch details.
Isolated CBN CBN separated into a purified ingredient. Purity, residual solvents, contaminants, and manufacturer documentation.
Converted CBN CBN made through chemical conversion from another cannabinoid. Manufacturing disclosure, residual reagents, contaminant testing, and COA.
Unknown-source CBN CBN source is unclear or poorly documented. Request documentation before purchase or choose a better-documented product.

CBN vs CBD vs THC

CBN, CBD, and THC are different cannabinoids. They should not be described as interchangeable, and product labels should be reviewed carefully because full-spectrum cannabinoid products may contain trace THC.

Topic CBN CBD THC
Full name Cannabinol Cannabidiol Tetrahydrocannabinol
Main association THC aging or degradation. Major hemp cannabinoid. Primary intoxicating cannabis cannabinoid.
Intoxication Should be discussed cautiously; not the same as THC. CBD itself is not impairing. THC can cause intoxication.
Drug testing THC content and product quality matter. Full-spectrum CBD may contain trace THC. THC metabolites are commonly tested.
Product review Check source, THC, COA, residual solvents, and contaminants. Check CBD amount, THC, COA, and ingredients. Check potency, legality, and impairment risk.

Helpful next steps: understand the difference between CBD and THC, learn about cannabinoids in hemp, and understand full-spectrum CBD products.

Does CBN Make You High?

CBN should not be treated as the same as THC, but consumers should review THC content, product source, and Certificates of Analysis before use.

  • CBN is not the same cannabinoid as THC.
  • THC can cause intoxication.
  • CBN products may still contain THC depending on formulation and sourcing.
  • Full-spectrum products may contain trace THC within applicable hemp limits.
  • Delta-8 THC is intoxicating and is not the same as CBN.
  • Consumers should review labels and COAs before using cannabinoid products.

For related safety education, understand the difference between CBD and THC and review Delta-8 THC safety concerns.

Does CBN Help With Sleep?

Retail CBN products are not FDA-approved treatments for insomnia or sleep disorders. Research is developing, and retail CBN products should not be treated as proven sleep aids.

Some CBN sleep research exists, including limited human research and animal research. However, early or limited research should not be treated as proof that retail CBN products treat insomnia or sleep disorders. Product quality, dose, formulation, THC content, study design, and individual differences matter.

Safety reminder: Sleep problems should be discussed with a licensed healthcare professional. Do not combine cannabinoid products with alcohol or sedating medications without medical guidance.

What CBN Research Says and What It Does Not Prove

CBN research is still developing. Early-stage, animal, laboratory, or limited human research should not be interpreted as proof that retail CBN products are appropriate for symptoms, disorders, or disease.

Research Area Safer Framing
Sleep Early research exists, but claims must remain cautious.
Pain Research interest does not make a retail CBN product a pain treatment.
Inflammation Laboratory findings should not be read as consumer product outcomes.
Anxiety and depression Mental-health concerns should be discussed with a licensed healthcare professional.
Appetite Appetite concerns should be discussed with a licensed healthcare professional.
Neurological conditions Seizures or neurological concerns require licensed clinical guidance.
Skin conditions Persistent skin concerns should be discussed with a qualified healthcare professional.

Synthetic Cannabinoids, Converted Cannabinoids, and Why Language Matters

The phrase synthetic cannabinoid can mean different things in consumer discussions. Public-health warnings about synthetic cannabinoids often refer to illicit products such as K2 or Spice, which are not the same thing as every isolated or converted hemp-derived ingredient. However, converted or unclear-source cannabinoid products still deserve careful review because manufacturing methods, residual solvents, reagents, contaminants, THC content, and labeling can affect safety.

  • Do not confuse CBN with K2 or Spice.
  • Converted cannabinoids require manufacturing transparency.
  • Unknown-source products should be avoided or questioned.
  • COAs should include cannabinoid content and safety testing where applicable.
  • Delta-8 THC is intoxicating and is not CBD or CBN.

For a related consumer-safety topic, review Delta-8 THC safety concerns.

Can CBN Contain THC or Matter for Drug Testing?

CBN products may contain THC depending on the formulation, source material, and manufacturing process. People subject to workplace, athletic, professional, licensing, probation, or other testing should review THC content and COAs carefully.

  • Hemp-derived does not automatically mean THC-free.
  • Full-spectrum products may contain trace THC.
  • CBN products should be reviewed for THC content.
  • Delta-8 THC is intoxicating and is not the same as CBN.
  • Drug-testing risk depends more on THC exposure than CBN itself.
  • No cannabinoid company should guarantee drug-test outcomes.

Review these resources before using products that may contain THC: learn whether CBD can matter for drug testing, view Bluegrass Hemp Oil Certificates of Analysis, and learn about CBD lab testing.

What to Check Before Buying a CBN Product

A trustworthy CBN product should be easy to verify. If the source, cannabinoid amounts, THC content, or testing information is unclear, choose caution.

  • Is the CBN source clearly explained?
  • Is the product full-spectrum, broad-spectrum, isolate, or converted?
  • Is CBD amount listed?
  • Is CBN amount listed?
  • Is THC content listed?
  • Is there a batch-specific Certificate of Analysis?
  • Does the COA match the product?
  • Does the COA include residual solvent testing?
  • Does the COA include heavy metal testing?
  • Does the COA include pesticide testing?
  • Does the COA include microbial testing?
  • Does the COA include mycotoxin testing where applicable?
  • Are serving directions clear?
  • Are warnings visible?
  • Are age restrictions and state compliance addressed?
  • Does the company avoid disease, sleep-treatment, pain, anxiety, or cure claims?

Helpful resources: read the CBD product label guide, read the CBD quality guide, and learn about CBD lab testing.

Product Quality: COAs, Lab Testing, and Manufacturing Transparency

Lab testing and Certificates of Analysis help customers review cannabinoid content, THC levels, batch information, and product-specific testing details. They support transparency, but they do not establish that CBN products are appropriate for sleep problems, anxiety, pain, inflammation, neurological conditions, or any disease.

Cannabinoid Profile

Review CBD, CBN, THC, and other listed cannabinoids by batch.

Contaminant Testing

Look for residual solvents, heavy metals, pesticides, microbial testing, and mycotoxins where applicable.

Batch Match

Clear contact information helps customers ask product-specific questions.

Use these resources to verify product information: view Bluegrass Hemp Oil Certificates of Analysis, learn about CBD lab testing, read the CBD product label guide, and read the CBD quality guide.

CBD and Cannabinoid Safety

Cannabinoid products are not risk-free. Adults should review medication, pregnancy, breastfeeding, liver-safety, drowsiness, and drug-testing considerations before using cannabinoid products.

  • CBD may interact with medications, including prescription drugs, over-the-counter drugs, herbs, and supplements.
  • CBD may affect liver-safety considerations.
  • Cannabinoid products may cause drowsiness or sleepiness in some people.
  • Drowsiness risk may increase with alcohol or sedating medications.
  • CBD may cause digestive changes, appetite changes, irritability, agitation, or mood changes.
  • FDA strongly advises against CBD use during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
  • Keep cannabinoid products away from children and pets.
  • Do not drive or operate machinery until you understand how a cannabinoid product affects you.

Before using CBD or related cannabinoid products, review CBD medication interaction guidance and read how long CBD may stay in your system.

Sources and Further Reading

This article uses consumer-safety, public-health, and research sources to support cautious cannabinoid education.

Final Takeaway

CBN is an interesting cannabinoid because it is tied to how THC can change over time. The most useful consumer question is not whether CBN is “better” or “stronger,” but whether a product clearly explains its source, cannabinoid content, THC level, testing, ingredients, warnings, and manufacturing transparency. When the label or COA is unclear, choose caution and ask questions before use.

Full Spectrum Living with CBD - The CBD Craze

In this episode of the Full Spectrum Living CBD podcast, join Adriane, Jessica, and Meredith as they discuss the CBD craze. This was recorded three years ago; however, in today's CBD market, this mass flooding that has taken place is washing through as we speak.

Many CBD companies today have come and gone. The total losses for many pharmaceutical-style CBD companies have been in the billions.  One foreign hemp company operating in Kentucky lost over 500 million dollars. Many of these products were and are directed from outside the United States to be sold to the US market and offer no therapeutic value based on standard cannabis manufacturing technologies. These products seek to deceive the consumer.  CBD is not a substance known for recreational use but can contain profound benefits.  In this episode of Full Spectrum Living with CBD podcast, the ladies discuss the CBD craze and how these products can have adverse side effects for consumers and the industry.

These companies that promote these products ultimately cheat farmers and consumers looking for the benefits of cannabinoids. CBD water, yoga pants,  pillows, and more have been pushed upon the US consumer.  All of these products were manufactured with the isolated pharmaceutical style of cannabinoids, isolation process if it was in the product.

With the long-term THC markets in states like California and Colorado, let's not forget Oregon and Washington. If there were anything to it, you could buy THC pillows, THC water, THC yoga pants, and more in those long-term cannabis states from the isolation process. Yet those products do not exist, and that process is not in demand from THC medical advocates.  U.S. consumers are being take advantage of by these subpar processes and products because of outside influence and money.

BHO is a private, locally owned, family business. Starting in 2014, owners Bill and Adriane needed a healthy alternative for their son Colten, who was diagnosed with Idiopathic Generalized Epilepsy at age 3. After battling a pharmaceutical roulette, they decided to help change Kentucky legislation for industrial hemp production. This meant that they would soon be able to give their son CBD, which has been presenting great success for disorders like Epilepsy.

 8) BLOOM-CRAFTED

That's right. We only extract from proprietary C. Sativa blooms. The bloom of the cannabis plant is the epicenter that houses the majority of cannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids. When you create a high-quality applesauce, do you use the tree's core, seeds, stem, and trunk? No, of course not. Yet that is what many others due, as quality is not a genuine concern but a marketing narrative for them.

Full Spectrum Living with CBD Podcast – Extraction Methods

In this episode of Full Spectrum Living with CBD podcast, Adriane, Jessica and Meredith  cover the most common CBD extraction methods.  They breakdown each method and discuss the plus and minus of each as well as how they can effect the end products performance. They cover our extraction method of choice and it's pluses and minus as well as the overall direction we think the CBD / medical cannabis industry will ultimately go. Watch the CBD podcast about CBD extraction methods to better understand why all CBD oil is not the same.

“WHAT EXTRACTION METHOD DO YOU USE?”

This is a very common FAQ. Rightfully so. Consumers should be concerned with how their CBD products are produced, especially in today’s market. Extracts are most commonly made either by processing the flower with a hydrocarbon like butane or propane (known as Butane Hash Oil or BHO <- See the connection here to our Bluegrass Hemp Oil, BHO? ????), pressurizing the material with carbon dioxide (CO2) or soaking it with ethanol. In this blog, we’ll take the time to review our method of choice, hydrocarbon extraction, bring some of its misconceptions to light, and introduce a few other standard techniques. Review our method of choice

HYDROCARBON EXTRACTION

An article written by Lindsay Maharry, “Debunking the BHO Stigma: A Scientist’s Take on Butane Hash Oil vs. CO2 Extraction,” does an excellent job of shining a light on how unsafe practices engaged in by kids changed the perception of this extraction method. (I highly recommend you read it!) When in fact, this method, if done correctly, is completely safe. Hydrocarbons are non-polar, meaning they bind to the more fat-soluble components of the plant (cannabinoids and terpenes only) to extract compounds from cannabis plant material gently. The result is a higher-purity extract and the only product that resembles the plant from which it came. Butane and propane allow organic solvents to be used in an extraction process that produces the richest cannabinoids and terpenes. This oleoresin is live resin. The live resin extraction method makes high-quality cannabis oil like what we use for our Genesis Blend full spectrum CBD oil. Review our method of choice.

OTHER COMMON EXTRACTION METHODS

Co2: Co2 extraction is a process that uses pressurized carbon dioxide to pull desired cannabinoids from the plant. Its vapor pressure is so high the CO2 disappears, leaving no potential for residual. However, this pressure is harsher on the plants and strips the terpenes during the process. In Maharry’s article, she explains the appeal of this process to manufacturers in the industry, stating it allows companies “to get away with running poor quality flowers” because they are producing a homogenous product. (In her case, she focuses on THC only, whereas what we see in the hemp industry is CBD only.) This affects the overall quality of CBD oil. If the cannabinoids do not get extracted during the extraction process, how can they end up in the final CBD Oil? They can’t. Some Co2 extraction machines look big and fancy but do not produce high-quality extract CBD oil.

Ethanol: In this process, the solvent, Ethanol, is passed over the plant material to dissolve the cannabinoids in the plant. Because ethanol is a “polar” solvent, it will want to bind to the water-soluble components of the plant. The result is a less pure, generally less potent, end product that needs further post-processing and refining. Therefore, it has limitations in making a genuinely pure, full-spectrum extract. Have we discussed we only want the significant lipids from the plant material? That is why the only plant matter we like to use is the bud or flower from the cannabis or hemp plants.

Endocannabinoid system (ECS)

Many people ask: “How can CBD offer a wide variety of powerful results for things ranging from anxiety and neurodegeneration to even auto-immune disorders?” Surprisingly, The answer lies not so much in CBD (Cannabidiol) itself but how CBD as well as the other benefitual cannabinoids, terpenoids and flavornoids are working to augment the Endocannabinoid system (ECS).

Therefore, The Endocannabinoid System (endo meaning ‘within’) is a biological system focused on mediating physiological balance, fundamentally known as homeostasis. Some of the first homeostatic functions we often hear from clients are a better night’s sleep, a regulated appetite, and reduced anxiety. These are a few of the first indicators that CBD is kicking in and starting to help boost our natural production of endocannabinoids. Amazing Discovery The Endocannabinoid System

The Sum Is Greater Than The Parts.

Full spectrum oleoresin the highest grade cannabis extract. Similarly, like an orchestra or assembly line, each part plays an essential role in the show. A drum solo is excellent, do not get us wrong, but no one wants to sit through a concert listening to only drums while the other band members decide to sit this one out. The Sum is greater than the parts.

For instance, having different natural elements in our CBD Genesis Blend breathes life into what is known as the “Entourage Effect. All naturally occurring cannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids blend synergistically, allowing their coexistence to be more beneficial than an individual component standing alone. These natural cannabinoids bind to receptors in our Endocannabinoids System.  All species with a vertebrate have an Endocannabinoid System.   Humans and animals, such as dogs, Cats, and Horses, all have endocannabinoid receptors.
